Tom Six’s 2009 film The Human Centipede (First Sequence) was one of last decade’s most hyped horror films and for good reason. The brutality displayed was awesome and the storyline gave us something never before seen in the horror genre, and as expected Tom Six followed through in giving us The Human Centipede II (Full Sequence). While the sequel did not receive the same hype it was definitely heavily sought after when reports came out that it would involve a much bigger “centipede”, and then the negative reviews began streaming in. I went into this piece with an open mind and hope that I would enjoy the experience, but that was far from the case as Tom Six completely undid whatever positives were leftover from the first piece and gave us an utterly pathetic sequel not worthy of watching.

When the extremely disturbed loner Martin comes across Tom Six’s The Human Centipede (First Sequence) he becomes obsessed with Dr. Heiter’s work and initiates his own plans for a human centipede outdoing the one in the film.

How is it that you screw up a film that only furthers the carnage given in the very enjoyable original effort? You do so by trying to be someone you are not and failing horribly at it, which is exactly what Tom Six did with this one. From the get-go we are thrown into the miserable life that Martin lives, however with virtually no character development whatsoever it is hard to find him the least bit interesting, albeit likable as well. We then follow him as he begins to capture those frolicking about the parking garage this dope works security at in hopes of creating a “centipede” over a dozen people long, and as expected…he does just that. I admit it was pretty sweet to see such a gruesome act consisting of over a dozen people with their mouths stapled to someone else’s ass, but the story overall was very dry and quite simple as well – just consisting of Martin catching his prey, subjecting them to centipede-ism, then the usual third act where they try and escape.

Tom Six’s direction is where the film really lags and falls into utter despair as he gives us pathetic and unlikable execution of virtually every element of the film. Martin was horrible, the characters made into the centipede sucked, and along with a boring storyline there was very little Six could do to make up for what he already suffered in his direction. After completing the film (in color) he chose to change the aspect to black and white, which was not necessarily a bad ideas as he felt it made the film scarier. I will not debate that because I think he was right, but coupled with the bleak plot and his poor execution it felt as he was going for David Lynch and instead found himself as Uwe Bole.

Overall, The Human Centipede II (Full Sequence) is a boring mess from the get-go that sadly never reaches the enjoyment provided in its predecessor. Sure the gore is there and some scenes are brutal and hard to watch, but at the same time the rest of the film was brutal and hard to watch due to poor execution. Not recommended.
